    Michigan EA decision

Continuing our look at EA results, lets consider Michigan.
Michigan is arguably the best university  to offer an EA optoin.

Like Illinois  Michigan is best known ( at least internationally) as an engineering school.
Most of the Engineering and computing departments rank in the  top 10  nationally.
Michigan is strong across the board from the Ross school of business to thre  education  school and even the world class liberal arts core of the  LSA ( school of Literature, sciences and Arts)

If accepted at  Michigan, the only better universities are the elite  schools

Programs to consider applying to are
    • Harvard
    • Stanford
    • Duke
    • University of Chicago

    • University of Pennsylvania
    • CMU ( for Computer Science)

    • University of Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh

    How to use EA decisions

Since several EA decisions will be being announced in the next two weeks  it is a good time to think about how to  use this to your best advantage.
If accepted EA to a  very selectie school  that you definitely want to enroll in , then you are done. Immediately forget about admissionsand focus on finances

If accepted to  one of your safety options  suvh as Illinois  Tech( for engineering)    use this as a sign you  need to  be more ambitious.  Eliminate  RPI, RIT and WPI from your lists and look instead at CMU, Case Western, Michigan and Georgia  tech. Focus all your energy on a few elite schools  and work  in a focussed manner  until Jan 01.

I will look at strategies for individual EA programs in the coming week.

Early Action results have started - illinois Institute of Technology

The most awaited part of the admission cycle has started -   admission decisions. Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT or illinois Tech)   has  sent acceptance letters to  some EA applicants.
One of ClearSky's students from India  was accepted with a US$25,000 scholarship.

IIT is a well reputed engineering svhool based in Chicago.   it is one of the few    engineering speciality institutes to    have both a law school and a business school.

its small size means the faculty focus is more on undergraduate teaching  ratherthan research.
With a generous aid policy, IIT  is a good option for students interested in STEM programs.

    Plan for December

There are only 5 weeks left in  the main admissions cycle. You need to plan to maximize your   effort.
If you have been  following this blog , you know you should always apply ED and EA

by mid december  ( around the 13th usually)  you will learn of your EA applications.
If accepted congratulations!.  If its an ED - you are done. If EA , Its timre to get  more ambiyois -  pick the schools you liked but were intimidated by.  Use your remaining time to  really fogus on thes saps and write  a great  essay.
If rejected,  re evaluate your profile -  look at  smaller libderal arts colleges that may suit your  needs better than a big university. Also keep in mind several schools have February deadlines and rolling admissions options.

As always you can contact  us at clearskyadmissions@gmail.com for more information and personalized help.

Our faculty and students believe collaborative teams are the key to great accomplishments. Please describe a time in your life (academic, co-curricular, or otherwise) where you had to collaborate to accomplish more than you could alone. (250 word limit)
3)While the world as a whole may be more technologically advanced than ever before, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has outlined 14 Grand Challenges that engineers should focus on to improve life on the planet. Learn about the Grand Challenges at www.engineeringchallenges.org and tell us which challenge is most important, and why. (250 word limit)

    Supplementary Essays

If you sre planning to apply EA or ED you should be done with your common app by this stage - all that remains   are the supplementary essays.

Apart from a few schools that have very involved supplements like Caltech and the University of Chicago   most follow a  few standard prompts  on the lines of :

    1. What is your intended major. How did you develop this interest. How do you intend to pursue this at  University X
    2.  Why  University X. How do you intend to pursue your academic and extra curricular interests at University.
    3. A question about career goals and the role that University X will play in reaching them

    _____________________________________

The key to this essay is to customize it to each school. If you happened to visit -  you can use that as a  part of your essay. On my visit to campus - I was most impressed by how the  faculty knew several students by name or even - my lunch in the student union was the best campus meal I had during my   college tours.
Basically all the schools you wil be applying to will have  great faculty,  a smart motivated peer group, a vibrant urban location and  peaceful close knit family atmosphere.   Be specific to each school- mention labs, faculty  and local landmarks by name

When faced with  four or five of the same essays there is a great temptation to copy paste.
This is dangerous - many students forget to change the university name in each essay or  they forget to change the name of a particular   department/college.   The Ross school  of business is at Michigan.  An Admissions  officer will latch on the each of these and they can easily disqualify you.

    Early Action and Early Decision

The Early action /Early Decision deadline for most universities is  Nov ,2017. I have already discussed which are the best EA options - once again:

    •  Tulane University
    • Case Western Reserve   University
    •  University of  Michigan
    • Purdue  University
    • Rutgers University
    •  California Institute of Technology
    • MIT
    • Georgetown  University
EA  options  tend to be large research universities -  the smaller liberal arts schools  tend to only have Early Decision   cycles.

Many  of the applications will requite a supplementary essay on the lines of " Why University X". Please resist the temptation to recycle the same essay and write individual essays for each school.

    Application Deadlines are Looming

As we approach mid October  the Early  round of college admission  is almost upon us.
Georgia Tech kicks off the party with a October 15 Early Action deadline.
GeorgiaTech is a premier  STEM university  and it only gets more competitive each year. Applying early  is the best option here  because  if accepted  you need only to look for schools that offer more financial support. Only CMu, MIT, ad Stanford have  better  CS and engineering programs.
Most Early Action, Early decision  cycles habea November 1 deadline.

The University of California application  also has  November 30 deadline as does the University of Texas system.  Note that both of thes have their own applications and are not on the common app or coalition application. Many  universities with rolling admissions use November 1 as a priority application deadline- which gets treated much like an Early action plan. Dont forget schools like the University of Washington with  aNovember 15 deadline.

Students in India and  can take advantage of the coming Diwali vacation  to complete their applications in time.   Everyone needs to   focus and start   ticking schools off their checklist.

    Early Decision and Early Action

    Early Decision and Early Action

The Early Decision ( ED) and Early Action( EA) deadlines are   looming --> only 27 days to g

As you probably know - ED   applications are binding while Early Action  is not.
To confuse matter several universities  have terms  sucg as restrictive Early action and Single choice early action  which are  binding.    It is your responsibility as an applicant to read the fine print of the conditions involved before applying.

I  strongly recommend applying ED if you are set on  a dream  college.  I also think everyone should apply to one or two strong EA options( if not applying to  a restrictive ED or EA).

The universities I recommend as EA options are:

    •  Georgia Tech
    •  University of  North Carolina - Chapel Hill
    • Purdue University
    •  University of  Maryland-  College  Park
    • University of Chicago
    • Georgetown University
    • Californis Institute of Technology ( Caltech)
    •  University of Michigan
    •  University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign

University of California Personal Insight essay prompt #6

University of California Personal Insight essay prompt #6

Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.

This need not be an essay about your major - just something that inspires you-  picking a unique or unusual hobby or activity of yours is a good way to answer this. Music or Art  is a good  area to  pursue

Talk about how you   came to the subject. Did you have any mentors  who guided you.      Who do you turn to for help. Atrt you an autodidsact ( self-taught) or have you  engaged in formal lesarning.

The admissions team is interested in knowing about your intellectual passions -   what do you bring to campus and  are you likely to be as passionate in college about your studies.
Stay honest and direct.  dont try to fake a passion for a subject- it is far too obvious.

Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?

Use  this prompt to talk about how you react to challenges and how  you overcome them.
As always   use your words to   talk about your thought process and actions , rather than in describing the situation.

Examples include a health issue or difficulty in coping at a new school.

Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?

Again , it is important to describe what you learned and  how you did  the work rather than  describe the task itself.  Talk about any skills  or habits you developed in this process and how it affected your mindset.  College is  supposed to be a major educational challenge so the admissions team  wants to know how you will  face this  and what resources or skills  you can  count on to get through the adjustment period.

If other people played a role in helping you  face this challenge -  it is important to mention them  and give credit.

University of California Personal Insight essay prompt #3

What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?

Think carefully about this.   There is a fine line berween being proud of your skills and being boastful.  Spend more time  on the second  part of the prompt. How did you develop this skill.   How did you learn you have it and how did you develop it.   The admissions officers want to know how you can focus and immerse yourself in a domain you enjoy- ideally bringing the same enthusiasm and dedication to  your studies.    It is important to cite and give credit to the roles others have played in this - it could be family, coaches or  teachers  who first noticed your ability and helped nurture it.

University of California Personal Insight essay prompt #2

Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.

This is a very  open ended  question. What the admissions team wants to know is what creativity means to you as a person and ohw it impacts your life as a student.
Write about how your creative interests affect your studies and work.   Are your creative interests  an influence in choosing a major.     If you have interdisciplinary interests  such as integraing  art or music in education this is a good prompt to   discuss this.

University of California    Personal Insight  essay prompt #1

    1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time.

This looks like a standard Leadership essay  but its iportant not to fall into the trap of writing a formulaic essay.   While It asks you to describe your position, what the admissions team is truly interested in is  your definition of leadership.  It need not be a job title but  its really a position where you influence and impact others. For example  merely being a big brother is a  important and influential leadship role. Please avoid the
    sports/ stage  hero stereotype.
You want to think and write about what you accomplished and whar you kearned from the experience.

    University of California Essay Prompts

    University of California Essay Prompts

The University of Clifornia system continues to be   the premier public University System in the USA.

Ther are 10 campuses and 6 of thes are consistently ranked amogst the best universities in the USA

    • Berkeley
    • UCLA
    • San Diego
    • Santa Barbara
    • Irvine
    • Davis

In the past, incoming freshman wrote two core essays answering two prompts. The two essays had to be a total of no more than 1,000 words. The UC is now calling its new essay prompts, “Personal insight questions,” and students must choose four out of eight to answer. And they are each supposed to be under 350 words

The prompts and things to consider are copied from the University of California  website:

    1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time.

Things to consider: A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about what you accomplished and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities?
Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church, in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family?

    2. Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.

Things to consider: What does creativity mean to you? Do you have a creative skill that is important to you? What have you been able to do with that skill? If you used creativity to solve a problem, what was your solution? What are the steps you took to solve the problem?
How does your creativity influence your decisions inside or outside the classroom? Does your creativity relate to your major or a future career?

    3. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?

Things to consider: If there’s a talent or skill that you’re proud of, this is the time to share it. You don’t necessarily have to be recognized or have received awards for your talent (although if you did and you want to talk about it, feel free to do so). Why is this talent or skill meaningful to you?
Does the talent come naturally or have you worked hard to develop this skill or talent? Does your talent or skill allow you opportunities in or outside the classroom? If so, what are they and how do they fit into your schedule?

    4. Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.

Things to consider: An educational opportunity can be anything that has added value to your educational experience and better prepared you for college. For example, participation in an honors or academic enrichment program, or enrollment in an academy that’s geared toward an occupation or a major, or taking advanced courses that interest you — just to name a few.
If you choose to write about educational barriers you’ve faced, how did you overcome or strive to overcome them? What personal characteristics or skills did you call on to overcome this challenge? How did overcoming this barrier help shape who are you today?

    5. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?

Things to consider: A challenge could be personal, or something you have faced in your community or school. Why was the challenge significant to you? This is a good opportunity to talk about any obstacles you’ve faced and what you’ve learned from the experience. Did you have support from someone else or did you handle it alone?
If you’re currently working your way through a challenge, what are you doing now, and does that affect different aspects of your life? For example, ask yourself, “How has my life changed at home, at my school, with my friends or with my family?”

    6.  Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.

Things to consider:  Many students have a passion for one specific academic subject area, something that they just can’t get enough of. If that applies to you, what have you done to further that interest? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had inside and outside the classroom — such as volunteer work, internships, employment, summer programs, participation in student organizations and/or clubs — and what you have gained from your involvement.
Has your interest in the subject influenced you in choosing a major and/or future career? Have you been able to pursue coursework at a higher level in this subject (honors, AP, IB, college or university work)? Are you inspired to pursue this subject further at UC, and how might you do that?
    7. What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?

Things to consider: Think of community as a term that can encompass a group, team or a place  like your high school, hometown or home. You can define community as you see fit, just make sure you talk about your role in that community. Was there a problem that you wanted to fix in your community?
Why were you inspired to act? What did you learn from your effort? How did your actions benefit others, the wider community or both? Did you work alone or with others to initiate change in your community?

    8. Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you stand out as a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California?

    non Common Application Universities

While the Common App is very comprehensibe and should  include most if not all of the universitie yyou want to apply tp ther are quite a few institutions otside the common app.
The most promient universities  not on the common app   are the  schools in the University of California  system.
Al nine Uiversities in the UC  system use the   UC application system

This involves writing four short answer essays from a t of 8 prompts. I will discuss thes eessays in individual posts

The University of Texas system , like Californa  does not utilize the common app but rather the ApplyTexas website instead

This involves riting one essay and 3 short answer prompts.
I will be discussing thes in separate  blog posts  as well.

MIT and Caltech are the most prominent  private universities outside the common app.

    Common Application Essay prompt #7

    Common Application Essay prompt #7

Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
This is  a very open prompt.  Pick this carefully. Make sure it address es something outside any of the  scope of the previous 6  options. It is very tempting to use an essay you wrote for another university  ( such as  the  University of California)  for this.   If you do ,  make you you edit the essay a little. admissions officers are well aware of all   admission essay topics  and will realize you are trying to take an easy option by merely doing a copying an existing essay.
The answer to this essay should be something that is not found  anywhere in your application.

2017-2018 Common Application Essay prompt #5

2017-2018 Common Application Essay prompt #5

Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

This prompt is the ideal way to  talk about the things  you do .
Do not focus on the stor of your achievement but on what  how you  worked towards it. The journey is more important than the destination.

Pleaes avoid cliches like  a "sports hero"  story unless you have a genuine  accomplishment at a very high level.( national or international)

As with most prompts the  second part - about  personal growth and  understanding is what the admissions officers are really interested in.

An interesting twisdt to this is to pick an event where things did not work out - failure is ofte a great  learning experience.

2017-2018 Common Application Essay prompt #3

Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

This is a  great prompt  to give an example of leadership. talk of how you took the initiative to act independently.   You can also give an insight to how you have a value system that makes you stand out from your peers. The belief you challenge can be  your own or that of a friend, teacher or even community.
The second part of the prompt is key - What prompted your thinking.
This should be used to  show the admission team how your mind works.
You should conclude by describing the outcome and how it affected you.   Would you repeat this behavior r not. What did you learn from the experience.
Universities want students whi are active participants in their education. You will be expected to ask questions and challenge the status quo.

2017-2018 Common Application Essay prompt #4

Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.

This looks very easy - how would tou solve a problem. But remember the key is why THIS problem. What is it sigbificance.  If you want to cure a disease - why -  have you lost someone special?

This is a great prompt for STEM students - do use it to talk about any experiences you have had in  working on and solving challenging problems.

2017-2018 Common Application Essay prompt #1

    The first prompt is:
Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

This is a fairly standard prompt.  The key here is  to talk abiut something that defines you.
Make sure  not to write about anything tha is already in your application.
This is a great opportunity to add a personality to your application. You can talk about how your background  and interests have shaped you as a young adult. You can write about  your family background,  talent, interest m even a friendship that has helped shape you.
It is important to try to connect your story to your collegiate aspirations and goals.
Focus on  how you were shaped .

Some of the best examples I have seen are  a student talking about   having dysgraphia, a learning disability and  how this has made  him a more active "hands-on" student rather than bookish.

Another student   opened with the line"   2 countries, 3 cities, 8 schools"  to talk about  her upbringing.  and education.
A good opening line like this is a  great way to get the readers attention and draw them in to tour story.

You need to identify that one experience or personality trait that shows the kind of person you are.
Everyone has more than one important trait, but in answering this prompt, you're telling admissions officers what you think as your most significant quality.
