Time to Submit your Application

You have only  2 days  before ED/ EA applications are due. By now  everything should be ready. Just do a once over sanity check  to make sure everything is uploaded correctly. Print out the entire application for your records. You can do this by selecting  the "preview" option before submitting the common app.

Chances are you   made use of some copy/paste  sentences or paragraphs. Please make sure you  refer to  each university  by the correct name or mascot.

Wishing all applicants  all the  Best of luck.

Early Decision and Early Action

Its dis October, leaving you only 2 weeks to get your EA and ED applications in. If you are a student who has a   clearly defined dream school - apply ED. This  will increase your admission chances considerably. Do note that its referred to as Selective Early Action or Restive Early Action at a few universities.

Other students should definitely apply EA to at least one university. Getting into a good  program through EA means you can focus solely on the  most difficult " reach" programs for your Jan 1 application and ignore the "safety" schools.

The best EA options  in my opinion are:

  •  Michigan
  • Illinois
  • Georgia Tech
  • Georgetown

Finally completing an Early application will leave you feeling more confident and prepared for the  Jan 1 deadline.

Carnegie Mellon (CMU) Early Decision. focus on SCS

Carnegie  Mellon (CMU) is another excellent choice for early decision applicants.
I recommend it highly for students interested in  engineering, computer science and the physical sciences  as CMU is one of the few places where  one can get research opportunities as an undergraduate.
CMU  also uses the common app and the supplementary essay is  rather basic-   it asks you to mention a book you read and  its impact.
There is also a optional essay for students who opt for an alumni interview.   This is recommended because it allows you to demonstrate interest in the school.   Alumni interviews tend to be informal and more  about personality and interests than  academic ability.
Your questions are as important as answers.

CMU  ED is especially recommended for students applying to  the Computer Science program.
SCS admissions rates are below 10% and even under ED below 15%.
CMU is arguably the best CS program  in the USA.   What is unique is that the school of computer Science   is(SCS)  a  separate college in the university  rather than  a department in the engineering college.
Within the SCS  there are departments such as Robotics, Machine Learning, HCI, Language /technologies

University of Chicago Early Action

The University of Chicago is  one of the   best Early Action options
The mission rates for EA a re around 12-15% which seems low but is favourable compared to the 6-8%  regular decision rate.
Chicago is  arguably  the most intellectual university  in  the  USA. It is best known for its  prowess in the social sciences  Chicago economists are regularly appointed by   international governments to  work on fiscal  and macroeconomic policy issues.

Chicago  used to have its own  application which  was known as the "uncommon application".  They are now on the common app but   require the uncommon supplement.  Chicago asks  5 uncommon questions :

Here is the current requirement:

2016-17 UChicago Supplement:

Question 1 (Required):

How does the University of Chicago, as you know it now, satisfy your desire for a particular kind of learning, community, and future? Please address with some specificity your own wishes and how they relate to UChicago.

Question 2 (Optional):

Share with us a few of your favorite books, poems, authors, films, plays, pieces of music, musicians, performers, paintings, artists, blogs, magazines, or newspapers. Feel free to touch on one, some, or all of the categories listed, or add a category of your own.

Extended Essay Questions:

(Required; Choose one)

Essay Option 1.

What is square one, and can you actually go back to it?
—Inspired by Maya Shaked, Class of 2018

Essay Option 2.

Once, renowned physicist Werner Heisenberg said: “There is a fundamental error in separating the parts from the whole, the mistake of atomizing what should not be atomized. Unity and complementarity constitute reality.” Whether it’s Georges Seurat’s pointillism in “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte,” the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, quantum physics, or any other field of your choosing, when can the parts be separated from the whole and when can they not?
—Inspired by Ender Sahin, Class of 2020

Essay Option 3.

The ball is in your court—a penny for your thoughts, but say it, don’t spray it. So long as you don’t bite off more than you can chew, beat around the bush, or cut corners, writing this essay should be a piece of cake. Create your own idiom, and tell us its origin—you know, the whole nine yards. PS: A picture is worth a thousand words.
—Inspired by April Bell, Class of 2017, and Maya Shaked, Class of 2018 (It takes two to tango.)

Essay Option 4.

Alice falls down the rabbit hole. Milo drives through the tollbooth. Dorothy is swept up in the tornado. Neo takes the red pill. Don’t tell us about another world you’ve imagined, heard about, or created. Rather, tell us about its portal. Sure, some people think of the University of Chicago as a portal to their future, but please choose another portal to write about.
—Inspired by Raphael Hallerman, Class of 2020

Essay Option 5.

Vestigiality refers to genetically determined structures or attributes that have apparently lost most or all of their ancestral function, but have been retained during the process of evolution. In humans, for instance, the appendix is thought to be a vestigial structure. Describe something vestigial (real or imagined) and provide an explanation for its existence.
—Inspired by Tiffany Kim, Class of 2020

Essay Option 6.

In the spirit of adventurous inquiry, pose your own question or choose one of our past prompts. Be original, creative, thought provoking. Draw on your best qualities as a writer, thinker, visionary, social critic, sage, citizen of the world, or future citizen of the University of Chicago; take a little risk, and have fun

The keys to a good answer is to stay true to your personality-   keep your essays true to yourself and yours answers idiosyncratic and individualistic
This is the place to talk proudly of any odd hobbies you may have. The key is to  project yourself as a smart young person who finds intellectual things fun.  "The life of mind" is  a phrase that is connected to the culture here.

University of Michigan Early Action and Early Decision

One of the best Early Action and Early Decision options is the  University of  Michigan

Michigan is  one of the    most renowned research universities globally and is  arguably the best public   university( Berkeley being the only contender)

Both Early decision and Early Action have a  November 01 deadline  and  you will hear back by mid December
Early  Decision is binding while Early Action    has no restrictions.
The main regular decision deadline is February 1 and    the early round  can often result in several  admissions slots being filled in advance.

I   recommend applying EA to  Michigan for all students interested in Engineering, computer science and other research  based  majors Michigan has  a very strong  research culture and many undergraduates take advantage  of the many opportunities on campus.
Applying ED is a very good idea if you are one of the many students who  see themselves  at Michigan  and find it their   number one option .
There are many reasons to pick Michigan

  •  College town Ann Arbor is a great college community. It is a vibrant town and  has every thing  one needs.  Naturally there are not as many  attractions and events as  Boston but there is always something  going on
  • Academic excellence.
  • Sports - The Wolverines are one of the true elite programs  in the country.
  • Diversity - it hard to find a more internationally diverse campus. The diversity at Michigan extends beyond demographics and
