3 days to Early Action

While it only  makes sense to apply Early Decision  if you have   identified one  ideal university , everyone should apply Early Action  to at least one university. Early Action is non committal, it   allows you  apply by Nov 1 , receive a response by mid December and then  respond by the summer

 For  Engineers and Science  majors:

  • Caltech
  • University of Illinois
  • Case Western Reserve University
  • Purdue University
  • University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
  •  University of Wisconsin - Madison
  For Social Science majors:
  •    University of  North Carolina - Chapel Hill
  • University of Washington
  • Rutgers University
  • Wisconsin - Madison
  •  Minneapolis - Twin Cities

Supplementary Essays

If you sre planning to apply EA or ED you should be done with your common app by this stage - all that remains   are the supplementary essays.

Apart from a few schools that have very involved supplements like Caltech and the University of Chicago   most follow a  few standard prompts  on the lines of :

1. What is your intended major. How did you develop this interest. How do you intend to pursue this at  University X
2.  Why  University X. How do you intend to pursue your academic and extra curricular interests at University.
3. A question about career goals and the role that University X will play in reaching them

_____________________________________

The key to this essay is to customize it to each school. If you happened to visit -  you can use that as a  part of your essay. On my visit to campus - I was most impressed by how the  faculty knew several students by name or even - my lunch in the student union was the best campus meal I had during my   college tours.
Basically all the schools you wil be applying to will have  great faculty,  a smart motivated peer group, a vibrant urban location and  peaceful close knit family atmosphere.   Be specific to each school- mention labs, faculty  and local landmarks by name

When faced with  four or five of the same essays there is a great temptation to copy paste.
This is dangerous - many students forget to change the university name in each essay or  they forget to change the name of a particular   department/college.   The Ross school  of business is at Michigan.  An Admissions  officer will latch on the each of these and they can easily disqualify you.

Early Action and Early Decision

The Early action /Early Decision deadline for most universities is  Nov ,2017. I have already discussed which are the best EA options - once again:

  •  Tulane University
  • Case Western Reserve   University
  •  University of  Michigan
  • Purdue  University
  • Rutgers University
  •  California Institute of Technology
  • MIT
  • Georgetown  University
EA  options  tend to be large research universities -  the smaller liberal arts schools  tend to only have Early Decision   cycles.

Many  of the applications will requite a supplementary essay on the lines of " Why University X". Please resist the temptation to recycle the same essay and write individual essays for each school.

Application Deadlines are Looming

As we approach mid October  the Early  round of college admission  is almost upon us.
Georgia Tech kicks off the party with a October 15 Early Action deadline.
GeorgiaTech is a premier  STEM university  and it only gets more competitive each year. Applying early  is the best option here  because  if accepted  you need only to look for schools that offer more financial support. Only CMu, MIT, ad Stanford have  better  CS and engineering programs.
Most Early Action, Early decision  cycles habea November 1 deadline.

The University of California application  also has  November 30 deadline as does the University of Texas system.  Note that both of thes have their own applications and are not on the common app or coalition application. Many  universities with rolling admissions use November 1 as a priority application deadline- which gets treated much like an Early action plan. Dont forget schools like the University of Washington with  aNovember 15 deadline.

Students in India and  can take advantage of the coming Diwali vacation  to complete their applications in time.   Everyone needs to   focus and start   ticking schools off their checklist.

Early Decision and Early Action

Early Decision and Early Action

The Early Decision ( ED) and Early Action( EA) deadlines are   looming --> only 27 days to g

As you probably know - ED   applications are binding while Early Action  is not.
To confuse matter several universities  have terms  sucg as restrictive Early action and Single choice early action  which are  binding.    It is your responsibility as an applicant to read the fine print of the conditions involved before applying.

I  strongly recommend applying ED if you are set on  a dream  college.  I also think everyone should apply to one or two strong EA options( if not applying to  a restrictive ED or EA).

The universities I recommend as EA options are:

  •  Georgia Tech
  •  University of  North Carolina - Chapel Hill
  • Purdue University
  •  University of  Maryland-  College  Park
  • University of Chicago
  • Georgetown University
  • Californis Institute of Technology ( Caltech)
  •  University of Michigan
  •  University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign
