Selecting a University part 2

In my previous  "selecting ta school"post I  advocated selecting a universityby trying to identify   the place  you feel most at home and the one that is most conducive to your intellectual growth.

This can be time time consuming and a lot of effort - b\ut I urge  you to  go through the process.

Here is a more straightforward  and easier way

Select the 5 characteristics that matter to you

 Some choices are

 1. Proximity too home
2.  Academic reputation of university
3.Reputation of the department  you are interested in.  Many universities  have individual programs that are ranked much higher than the university as a whole.  This is especially true at  STEM focussed  universities. For example the Computer science program at Carnegie Mellon is always ranked in the top 3 along with Stanford and  MIT  but CMU  rarely makes  into the top 20 in the national rankings.

4.  Climate. Dont underestimate how hard it can be to adjust to a  sub zero winter if you are from a warmer  part of the world.
5. Setting. Is it an urban school or Rural.  Are there good restaurants, theaters, bookstores nearby? These    things matter -  College life happens outside the classroom.

Now score each f your options on a 1-5 scale for the factors  you  used. Select the school with the most points.

Selecting a university

By now mot pf you will have heard back  from several univeraities.   Ideally most of your responses have been affirmative.  This still leaves   you with a major decision to make-
 Deciding which university to attend!.

This is not as easy as it  seems.  If you have only one acceptance  -  then say yes as soon as possible.

Selecting from multiple schools  is a question of deciding where  your priorities lie.
Factors that  people claim are important are
1. setting - rural or urban
2. climate
3.  ranking
4.  career support and job opportunities on graduation

These are all important  issues  to consider but keep in mind that you are essentially choosing a plce to call home  for the next 4 years ( often this tag will last your whole life)

Keep in mind that the intellectual environment at university is  just as important s the physical one.Ask your self  these questions

1. Do you want to be  at the top of your class  or do you want to be  intellectually challenged  on a daily basis.
2. Do you prefer a collaborative environment or do you thrive on competition?

3. Do you  like meeting new people daily or  do you want a core set of 5-10 friends that will   be friends for life.

4. Are you interested in a specific subject of study or do you want to explore  and search for your passion.
Anser these  honestly to get a feel of what you want from college and see which university give  you the best vibe. Talk to    current students ( the admissions Office will be able to connect to) and alumni.

Universities often have special visitation days for accepted student - Do this if possible.
Once you decide -  acept  quickly. Also  do send  a  rejection letter  to   any other options. This will allow them to start clearing waitlists.

Things to do While waiting for College dmissions Decisions

Waiting for college admissions decisions is a boring and stressful time for students, parents and counselors - basically anyone involved in the admissions process.
The results will be out soon so don't stress out. Results tend to come between March 15 and April 15. April Fools day is as good a day as any to  receive your college letter

Here are some things to do to pass the time

  1.  DONT  PANIC or STRESS OUT - At this stage  there is no benefit to getting excited.
  2.  DO Not call the university - Harassing the admissions committe or getting someone else to call on your behalf is not going to have  any impact. Actually it could backfire if you annoy someone too muc

  1.  Stay confident. You are  smart, hardworking and generally awesome - You will get in to college.   For fun invent a fictitious university."I got into 'Belle and Sebastian University.'  It sounds good just to say it.
  2. Write Thank  You notes - you should have done this already for the teachers who helped you with college - but everyone likes  being appreciated. This will be   your last few months  of school - thank all the teachers and staff  you can.
  3.  Spend time with friends.  You will be miles away from your best friends in a few months - hang out together and enjoy
  4. Learn something for fun -    like photography, cooking or a new language.
  5. Dont let  your grades drop. You studied too hard to  screw up in  your final year.
  6.  Check out if your  preferred colleges have  days to host  accepted students. You may want to visit campuses before deciding

  7.  Get your funds ready to pay a deposit at a great university. One semesters fees typically.

There  you go- this should keep you busy for the next  month.
 I sense a celebration soon.
